Recycling…

OK- so this is shameful to admit to the whole world (well, I guess the whole world doesn’t care to read my blog, but you wonderful people do!), but we’ve FINALLY just started heavy duty recycling. For some unknown and unjustified reason I’ve always thought that it would just take too much work and I’ve been telling myself for a long time “I’ll start it when _____ (fill in the blank)” Well, I’ve come to realize that life is never going to slow down or suddenly grant me more hours in the day to think about recycling ONLY so we’ve decided to just do it now. And guess what? It’s not that hard. It’s not that time consuming. In fact it’s LESS effort than we were putting into simply taking out the garbage every other day before! Now we’re only taking out the garbage about once a week! I also used to think that I had to go buy some fancy plastic tubs to neatly organize each item category (glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, and metal) and then thought… what’s the point in that? Isn’t it the point of recycling to RE-USE things we already have?? (Can we say DUH?) So lo and behold I found 5 cardboard boxes in the basement and brought them up to my kitchen, threw them under the breakfast nook counter and BOOM! Like a miracle we were suddenly recycling! Our city has yet to do the curbside pickup (but I heard it was supposed to start in 08) but we do have drop off points so how hard is it for hubby to take them on the way to work like every 2 weeks or so? Not hard!

I’m so glad we’ve started this and I encourage anyone else who has yet to begin to just try it because it’s so much easier than we tend to make it in our minds! I also love being able to teach my almost-2-year-old at such a young age how to do this in hopes that it will simply become part of his lifestyle!

Happy recycling!

I am very thankful to only have to take the trash out once a week now.
